The Queen’s Doll House at Windsor Castle is one of the largest Doll Houses in the world. It currently belongs to Queen Elizabeth II, but was originally designed for Queen Mary by Edwin Lutyens.
The 1:12 scale doll house is 8ft 5in wide, 4ft 8in deep and 5ft tall. It has all the creature comforts you could expect to see in a stately home of the period, and it has a few added extras like a strong room for the crown jewels.
It was completed in 1924 and gifted to Queen Mary as a thank you gift for her presence in World War 1.
This dollhouse is unlike any other and is detailed in every way from the floor to the ceiling of every level of the house.
When she received the doll house she wrote to those who made it that it was “The most perfect present that anyone could receive”.
It was put on display initially at the British Empire Exhibition at Wembley; 12 months later it was taken to the Ideal Home Exhibition at Olympia in West Kensington before returning to Windsor Castle in July, 1925, where is has remained ever since. It’s definitely considered a real highlight for visitors to the castle.
